ROMANIAN CITIZENSHIP​

Did you lose Romanian citizenship during the communist regime? Are you of Romanian origin and would like to regain Romanian citizenship?

Since 1991, the Romanian authorities have adopted specific legislation (Romanian citizenship law – Law No. 21/1991, republished and amended) for the descendants of ethnic Romanians to regain Romanian citizenship on the basis of their Romanian heritage. This means that many people can take advantage of the opportunity to obtain Romanian citizenship.

Former Romanian citizens who lost their Romanian citizenship for reasons beyond their control or who were deprived of it by the communist regime, as well as their first, second and third degree descendants, are entitled to file an application to regain their Romanian citizenship.

A person who wishes to regain his or her Romanian citizenship must meet certain requirements, including but not limited to the following

  • must be at least 18 years old at the time of filing
  • must be a person of good moral character, loyal to Romania and attached to the principles of the Romanian Constitution
  • must not have been convicted at home or abroad for an offense that makes them unworthy of being Romanian Citizens

Romania  allows dual citizenship.

Children under the age of 18 can be included in their parents’ application to regain Romanian citizenship.

The application for Romanian citizenship can be submitted directly to the National Citizenship Authority or to the Romanian consulates in the applicant’s country of residence.

STEPS TO REGAIN ROMANIAN CITIZENSHIP WITH US:

1. Schedule an initial consultation  to determine your eligibility to regain Romanian citizenship.  We will discuss your circumstances in detail and inform you of your options.

2. Sign the Engagement Letter (Representation Contract) and pay a deposit for the services to be rendered.

3. Receive a detailed memo (list of documents) for the documents we need to prepare the citizenship file.  We will assist you every step of the way in preparing the documentation, including in translating and notarizing the documents and collect the Hague Apostille.

4. Prepare the citizenship file for registration either at the Romanian Citizenship Authority or at the Romanian Consulate where you reside. We will assist you with the file registration.  

5. Preparation for the oath of allegiance to Romania and obtain the Romanian citizenship certificate after the approval of the citizenship application. 

6. Assistance with registering your foreign documents (birth certificate, marriage certificate, divorce decree, name change decree) with the Romanian authorities and in obtaining the Romanian corresponding documents.  This is a necessary step to take once you have received the Romanian citizenship certificate.

7. Romanian passport application assistance. Finally, we will assist you in applying for a Romanian passport either directly in Romania or at the Romanian consulate in your country of residence.

FOREIGN DOCUMENT REGISTRATION

Do you have a foreign civil status document and need to register (transcribe) it with the Romanian authorities?​

Do you have foreign civil status documents for yourself or your children and want to apply for or renew the Romanian passport?


Romanian citizens living or residing abroad,
no matter how many years they have been there, are obliged to register (transcribe) their foreign civil status documents, such as birth certificates, marriage certificates, divorce decrees or name change court orders, with the Romanian authorities.

For example:
If you had a Romanian passport that expired and you want to renew it, but in the meantime you got married or changed your name abroad, you must first register (transcribe) your foreign marriage certificate or name change court order with the Romanian authorities and then apply for Romanian passport.

For example: 
Do you have name discrepancies between your foreign documents and Romanian documents? If so, the Romanian authorities won’t renew or issue your Romanian passport until you sort out your documents.  We have considerable experience in dealing with complicated name discrepancies between documents.

There are certain requirements for Romanian citizens who have regained Romanian citizenship and have never resided in Romania from Romanian citizens who used to reside in Romania when their have to register they foreign civil documents with the Romanian authorities.

ROMANIAN RESIDENCE PERMIT
