What is the Romanian Passport?

The Romanian passport is an identity document, used mainly outside Romania’s borders by the Romanian citizens. Romanian Passport Day is marked every year on March 19th. On March 19th, 1912, the first modern law on passports was adopted, called “Law on Passports”, promulgated by King Carol I, by Royal High Decree no. 1758.

Who can apply for the Romanian passport?

Only Romanian citizens can apply for the passport, both those residing in Romania and those residing abroad. If you are of Romanian origin, or if you have lost your Romanian citizenship against your will, you must first regain Romanian citizenship in order to apply for a passport. Where can I apply for the passport?

Romanian citizens residing in Romania can apply at any public community service. For the Romanian citizens residing abroad, they have the possibility to apply directly in Romania or at the Romanian consulate responsible for their place of residence.

Do I need an appointment for the passport application?

Yes, in Romania you can make an appointment through this official link: https://hub.mai.gov.ro/epasapoarte/programari/harta.

Can I still use the passport if I changed my name?

No, if you have changed your name, you must apply for a new passport that reflects your current legal name.

What is the validity of a Romanian passport?

  • 10 years for applicants over the age of 18
  • 5 years for children over the age of 12
  • 3 years for children under the age of 12
